The MPEG is generally used for video encoding,
There are 3 types of MPEG used for Video:
MPEG-1
MPEG-1 is the most widely used format, and there is a decoder available for almost every popular platform. MPEG-1 was developed in 1993 by the Moving Picture Experts
Group as a means of highly compressing data. It is used as the standard for storing data on video CDs and multimedia applications, and can also be compressed at
differing levels for use on the internet.
MPEG-2
MPEG-2 was developed to satisfy the requirements of the digital video world. MPEG-2 produces higher quality picture and sound results, and is therefore used in DVDs,
digital television and similar applications.
MPEG-4
Although licensing has yet to be agreed, the MPEG-4 is said to be the natural successor to the MPEG-1. When available, the MPEG-4 will allow high levels of compression,
with very little loss of picture or sound quality.
